The use of natural accessories is enriching the global textile sector & sustainability

Valued at approximately $1.5 trillion, the global textile industry has been a cornerstone of economic development. As environmental consciousness among consumers rises, there is a growing demand for sustainable practices within this sector. A key strategy to mitigate the environmental impact of textiles is the incorporation of sustainable natural accessories. These accessories not only enhance durability, comfort, and aesthetic appeal but also contribute to environmental stewardship. For example, wooden buttons impart a refined look to garments, while plant-based dyes provide rich, enduring colors.

In garment design and functionality, accessories such as buttons, zippers, and decorative elements play a crucial role. Traditionally, these components are crafted from plastics, metals, and other non-biodegradable materials that are energy-intensive and resource-heavy to produce.

Bangladesh, a global manufacturing hub for garments, is at the forefront of embracing this shift toward sustainable fashion. The integration of natural accessories such as coconut shell buttons, wooden toggles, and bamboo trims reflects a broader trend driven by consumer demand for eco-friendly products. By 2025, the market for natural accessories could potentially add $300 to $400 million annually to Bangladesh’s Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector.

Coconut shells, a by-product of the food industry, are increasingly being utilized for buttons due to their durability, biodegradability, and unique appearance. This practice not only reduces waste but also minimizes environmental impact. Local Bangladeshi brand Deshal exemplifies this trend by incorporating coconut shell buttons into its designs, underscoring a commitment to sustainable sourcing. Renowned sustainable fashion brands like People Tree also use coconut shell buttons, highlighting their dedication to eco-conscious design.

Similarly, companies such as Patagonia, known for their sustainability efforts, employ FSC-certified wooden buttons. Bamboo, a rapidly renewable resource with a minimal environmental footprint, is favoured for its sustainability, further promoting the use of wooden accessories in fashion.

Traditional zippers, often made from synthetic materials like nylon, are notorious for their environmental impact due to their long decomposition periods. Natural rubber zippers, sourced from rubber trees, offer a biodegradable alternative with a significantly reduced environmental footprint. YKK, a leading zipper manufacturer, has introduced plant-based zippers made from natural rubber, providing a sustainable option without compromising quality.

The dyeing process in textiles is responsible for 20% of global industrial water pollution. Plant-based dyes, derived from natural sources like indigo, turmeric, and madder root, offer a non-toxic and biodegradable solution. Brands such as Eileen Fisher have adopted plant-based dyes, achieving vibrant colors while reducing chemical pollution.

Bangladeshi brands Jatra and Aranya exemplify the integration of traditional craftsmanship with modern design. By using natural materials such as organic cotton, handwoven fabrics, and natural dyes, these brands ensure their products are both eco-friendly and stylish. Their approach not only minimizes environmental impact but also preserves cultural heritage, earning them international recognition and expanding their market reach.

According to recent data, approximately 10% of garments produced in Bangladesh for international markets feature natural accessories, with local adoption rates steadily increasing to about 5-7%. The use of natural fibers such as organic cotton, hemp, and linen for decorative elements like embroidery, lace, and trims is on the rise.

The fashion industry is responsible for more than 10% of global carbon emissions. Transitioning from synthetic to natural materials can significantly reduce the industry’s carbon footprint and align with global sustainability goals. Utilizing locally sourced materials also cuts transportation costs and bolsters local economies.

According to a 2020 McKinsey study, 67% of consumers prioritize sustainable materials, and a Global Fashion Agenda survey found that 61% are willing to pay a premium for sustainable fashion. Despite challenges such as limited availability and the higher costs of natural materials, innovations and growing industry commitments suggest a promising future. Collaborative efforts within the industry will be crucial to advancing these practices and minimizing their environmental impact.
