Bangladesh's garment industry has cemented its global leadership position in sustainability and the green revolution in fashion, with 229 globally recognized eco-friendly factories.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Director Mohiuddin Rubel confirmed three more RMG factories in the country that have been certified as 'Green Factories'. The factories are - Ananta Huajing Limited in Narayanganj, Sepal Garments Limited in Gazipur, and Unitex Spinning Limited (Unit-2) in Sitakunda, Chattogram.
He said that through this addition, the number of eco-friendly factories in Bangladesh's garment and textile sector has increased to 229.
Of these, 91 are holders of the US Green Building Council's (USGBC) prestigious 'LEED Platinum' certification, with 124 factories receiving 'Gold' status, 10 'Silver', and 4 factories 'Certified'.
To obtain US Green Building Council (USGBC) environmental friendly certification, a factory scores more than 80 out of a total of 110 marks and is awarded 'Lead Platinum', 60-79 marks 'Lead Gold', 50-59 marks 'Lead Silver' and 40-49 marks are awarded 'Lead Certified' certificate.
BGMEA also said that 9 of the world's top 10 environmentally friendly factories and 61 out of 100 are in Bangladesh.
